not very often that I get a chance to blow my own trumpet (so to speak!).
So when my shiny new Orange 5 turned up sporting lots of spanky '08 gear, it gave me the perfect opportunity to showcase it here under the guise of a legitimate article ;-)

In the interests of time (and the fact I've yet to actually ride the thing!), I won't be reviewing any gear just yet but thought it might be of interest just to show you some of the '08 stuff hot off the shelves.
First up, the Fox Float Forks.

New features for '08 include improved damping, post mount disc brake tabs which Fox claim to have passed fatigue tests over 25 times higher than CEN / ISO STANDARD, ergonomic lockout lever (RLC & RL models) and easier to install integrated disc brake cable guide.
Oh yeah, they also look the mutt's nuts ;-)
Next up, new Shimano Deore XT rapidfire shifters.

Now featuring 2-Way Release for different riding styles or shifting (index finger or thumb) from various riding positions; The upper lever still performs the same function, but now it swings both ways.
Pull it with your finger or push it with your thumb-you choose. Instant release for quicker shifts.
Two position bracket;Choice of inboard and outboard position.
New concept Optical Gear Display;Optical Gear Display floats above the handlebar, allowing you to set the suspension control lever clamp easily. The Optical Gear Display is removable, and lid cover together with this shifter.
More Shimano Deore XT goodness come in the form of the new Shadow derailleur.

Boasting a new low profile design intended for more aggressive riding, Shimano say it's quieter as it won't contact the chain stay and that it's super low profile design carries many benefits. Because of its low profile and single tension construction, there's no hit to the chain stay in rough riding conditions, resulting in smooth and silent performance.
The new mech also features low profile for improved durability and protection from damage in narrow passages, direct routing reducing the risk of snagging and a stronger return spring for more crisp shifting feeling.
First impressions of the new XT are good - shifting is crisp and very positive, and the low profile RD could prove to be a godsend it tight situations. Again, it also looks the part :-)
I'll feedback more on the performance of the '08 kit once I've given the 5 it's maiden voyage. In the meantime, I'd like to say a big ass personal thanks to Orange for a stunning bike and for making me the envy of the workshop, if only for a day or 2 ;-)
