And now for something completely different...

What do you do when your usual mountain bike trails just don't thrill you anymore...you feel the urge to ride everywhere, over snow, ice, mud, sand dunes, small animals, anywhere the urge takes you?
Well, my hard-riding amigos, you need a Surly Pugsley.

Imagine two enormously fat wheels, connected by a skinny steel frame, and you've got yourself a Pugsley, designed specifically for the type of terrain where other mountain bikes dare not tread, like very deep snow or sand.

The Pugsley frame itself is fairly plain-looking, made of double butted 4130 chrome moly steel tubing, but look closer and you'll see some very clever tweaks to allow the use of insanely fat Endomorph 3.7'' tyres (the highest volume bicycle tyre on the market!) and Large Marge rims (65mm wide!) - a 100mm bottom bracket shell gives the clearance the chainstays need to take that monster tyre, and specially shaped seatstays offset the rear hub 17.5mm to the driveside, giving a straight chainline and the ability to run a conventional 9-speed drivetrain.

The cleverness extends to the front fork, which actually uses a rear wheel (135mm hub) as well, which means you can interchange your front & rear wheels, running one with a 9-speed cassette and the other with a singlespeed cog, ready for any eventuality....very clever!

The tyres are designed to be inflated to a very low 8-15 psi, providing greater traction and floatation due to the increased footprint.....ideal for those sand dunes that our customer, Bruce, is planning on tackling on this beast.
Because of the abuse all that sand will dish out, we kept things simple, running Avid BB7 mechanical disc brakes, easily-serviced Hope Pro 2 hubs, reliable Shimano XT shifters & mech and even a blingtastic Truvativ 'China plate' bashring!

It might look heavy, but Bruce's Pugsley tipped the scales at a very respectable 34.14 pounds, lighter than most all-mountain full-sussers, and probably more fun!

Look out for this monster ripping up the Scottish coastline and snowy mountains in the future...Bruce is loose!!
