Tracy and I set up The Hub in 2002-our idea was to serve a few cups of tea and then get out on our bikes and try and teach other riders what we had learnt through over 10yrs of racing professionally on the world mountain bike circuit.

Being naive about running our own business it took us several years to crawl from beneath the mound of paperwork and actually realise our original vision.  The first thing we noticed when we got back out on the trails was that a lot of regular riders were missing the core techniques from their riding and this was preventing them from progressing-they were plateauing-a comment that was repeated to us on numerous occasions.

These core techniques we realised, are the DNA of mountain biking, and without them it's hard to become a better rider-or in fact to start off in the right direction.

Any rider can benefit from our essentials courses and there’s a course for whatever point you are at with your riding-whether you're a complete beginner or a seasoned Glentress Rider.

Essential Basics

This course is an ideal starting point if you are new to mountain biking and looking for some good skills to get you started.
The course is a full day (9am-5pm) and will introduce you to some core skills that will improve your confidence, help you negotiate small trail obstacles, and get you moving round your bike for better control.

This course is for you if you:
-Have never tried mountain biking but would like to give it a go under expert instruction;
-Have done a bit of mountain biking on the green and blue trails but would prefer some tips to get you feeling more confident.

For all of our essentials courses we maintain a strict 2:6 ratio-we don't squeeze as many of you in as we can.  Tracy and I always run our own essentials courses-we will never, ever sub them out (we love it), the most important thing to us is that you get what you need for your riding.
Both of us are qualified Mountain Bike Leaders and have all our tickets to keep you safe and well looked after.

We are also the only guiding company that operate in Glentress that pay the Forestry Commission for the privilege-which means when you are guided by us you are putting something back into the trails that you just rode!

If you are looking for something different then feel free to mail us and it may be possible to arrange another date.  Also if you are a group looking for your own day and none of these suits then we may be able to cater for you-just give us an idea of what you want.

The forest can get quite busy at weekends which are why most of our courses run on Fridays, but if you can only make a weekend then contact us to arrange.

Important course info.

Every course starts at the Hub Café for introductions and coffee (very important).  Then your bike is loaded onto the trailer after we’ve touched on bike set up-so bring it along with you.
We then take you and your bike to the Buzzards Nest car park in the minibus and get started on the skills for the morning.
Lunch is included in the price which we normally have at the café, (if the weather is kind we’ll eat on the hill), and at the end of the day we finish with coffee and cake, usually whilst watching the video footage of you we have shot during the day.  A DVD of your day will be sent post course so you can remind yourself what you have learnt and what you need to work on.

We recommend that everyone uses flat pedals-whatever course you book onto.  The advantage of using flats-if you don’t already-is that you can really perfect the skills techniques without feeling inhibited by being clipped in.  They also make you really think about your skills as there’s no hiding poor technique on flat pedals.
It is of course entirely up to you but even if you give it a shot then go back to clipped in later in the day you will find it advantageous.  If you don’t have flat pedals we can provide them for you-just bring along a good pair of flat soled shoes-anything like skate shoe type footwear will be perfect.

We recommend:
DMR pedals and Shimano MP56 shoes
